The military and aerospace sectors were among the very first to adopt optical fiber technologies mainly because of their very light weight and immunity to electromagnetic interference. If it was originally for telecommunications, it is today more and more for sensing. SEDI-ATI Fibres Optiques is at the initiative of the collaborative project 3F2E (French Fiber Field for Extreme Environment), which was selected on October 19, 2021, to benefit from the French nuclear recovery plan.
The 3F2E project aims at developing metallic and/or carbon coatings on special optical fibers, allowing the use of sensors in extreme nuclear environments.
This work will make it possible to set up a 100% Made in France integrated supply chain and guarantee national sovereignty over this strategic technology.

SEDI-ATI fiber optic components and assemblies are used in robots and their control systems, meeting long-term requirements for torsion, bending, strength and bending radius.
Many industrial applications require a high-power laser source. This is the case for laser welding, soldering, cutting or stripping. The power patch cords are special optical fibers, designed to carry high levels of optical energy, and thus allow the laser source to be remote. The fiber is reinforced with a specific buffer and dedicated connectors.
Optical fibers are widely used to perform industrial optical sensing such as on-line process control or monitoring the structural health of materials and integrity of machines. SEDI-ATI Fibres Optiques is particularly involved in the design and manufacture of optical probes for UV-VIS-NIR (185 nm – 2.5 µm) spectroscopy by ellipsometry or reflectometry. These probes also allow the offset of the light source and the detector (monochromator, spectrophotometer…).

With the advent of quantum computing, data communication is taking a new turn. Fiber optics is more than ever at the heart of all the attention, whether for quantum communication or quantum metrology applications.
Photonics plays a central role in the development of quantum information technologies. Quantum key distribution systems for cryptography are already on the market and, thanks to their speed and robustness to decoherence, photons are at the heart of many advances towards large-scale secure networks, metrological systems, and quantum processors.
Quantum photonics is now entering a new field of application, related to metrology and quantum sensors. In particular, it is used for spectroscopy to characterize materials. Special new generation optical fibers allow to work at cryogenic temperatures, which are essential for the proper functioning of single-photon sources (semiconductor quantum emitters).
The optical fiber opens up a wide scope for the Medical fields. SEDI-ATI capitalizes on its experience with extreme environments to address very demanding and highly prescriptive medical applications. We talk to doctors, surgeons, researchers, and medical device manufacturers who lead the path to innovative and promising medical applications using optical fibers. We manufacture CE marked biocompatible fiber-based medical devices. They are widely used for medical diagnosis, laser therapies and laser surgeries.
Fiber optics are ideal to perform fluorescence spectroscopy analysis for diagnostic applications. They allow to illuminate a target at a defined wavelength, and to collect the fluorescence emitted by the target as a reaction to the excitation caused by the incoming light. The emitted fluorescence is relevant of the composition of the target, which allows to identify the nature of the target. These properties are for instance used to practice in-vivo diagnosis of cancers using special fiber needles, and to do blood analysis in laboratory to detect diseases.
The spatial and spectral properties of light are used in many therapeutic applications, particularly in phlebology, dermatology, urology and gynecology. Fiber optics is a technology of choice for deporting the laser light and energy in the procedures that are performed.
